great art begins with foundations
structure
FUNdaMENTAL Arts is a practical approach to representational drawing and painting. The classes stress the importance of strengthening observation skills by examining how an image is one shape that is divisible by smaller shapes. A successful rendering is the result of a well thought out plan. Practice in creating and executing structure can enhance problem solving abilities. A student who can see and apply structure can learn to render any image.
art is construction before reproduction
Students of all ages can develop an understanding of art construction. Art construction mirrors the structure of a mathematical equation; by adding different elements or sums a new sum is created. Construction of a drawing is the first element of a finished painting. FUNdaMENTAL Arts begins each class with drawing exercises. Students begin by defining the proportions of the image area and determining guide lines. These guide lines assist in the placement of key elements of a drawing. A sketch is constructed using measurements and comparisons. The students outline their pencil sketches in black and erase any unused pencil marks. Color, the final element in the construction of a painting or illustration is added as a layer on top of the finished black and white drawing. These main steps are found throughout all of the FUNdaMENTAL Arts curriculum. Learning the layering process of art construction teaches not only the creation of a new work but the principles of orchestrating a plan.
